Congratulations on picking the beautiful Overberg region as the backdrop for what we’re sure will be an unforgettable corporate get together. As you leave Cape Town, this picturesque piece of the southern coastal region makes you forget about the hustle and bustle of city life. If you’re travelling on the N2, we recommend you slow down, enjoy the scenery and stop for coffee (and a few treats!) at any one of the farm stalls on route.

With everything for the event organised down to the very last detail, you can breathe a sigh of relief that it’s under control. However, you’ve been thinking of how you will manage to keep your delegates entertained while they are away from home for the duration of the event. Not to worry! We’ve compiled a handy guide to help you pick a few pre-approved corporate-friendly activities that will have your delegates talking about your event for years to come!

Wine, gin and beer tasting

For the connoisseur

When the business side of things have been dealt with for the day and your delegates find themselves with an afternoon off, why not indulge in some of the fine wine, craft beer or craft gin produced in the area? Wine-lovers are in for a special treat as the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley Wine Route near the famous holiday town for Hermanus has become world-renowned for its award-winning wines. Book a ride with the Wine Hoppers or ChillGuru Bus so your delegates don’t have to worry about going over the limit.

If your delegates would prefer something other than wine, they might enjoy a craft gin tasting at Misty Mountains Estate – call ahead to give them a heads-up that you are headed their way. Lovers of craft beer will also not be disappointed! The Hemel-en-Aarde Brewery hasn’t been open for long, but already it’s become an absolute favourite with both the locals and visitors to Hermanus. If you’d like to venture a little further, we recommend you stop at Stanford Hills Estate – great wine and great food – your delegates will love it!

Shark cage diving and other adventure activities

For the adventurer

Sometimes, after sitting in a conference room for a long time, the best thing to do is the complete opposite! We do advise caution – it might be a good idea to consider the background and age of your delegates before going down this road. However, if your conference-goers are a lively bunch, they might be up for a little adventure. SA Forrest Adventures offers a variety of activities (they have various branches, so check which is closest to you) from a tree top zipline tour, to paintball and quad biking. For those looking to get even more up-close-and-personal with adventure, book a shark cage diving trip with Marine Dynamics. It is a sure-fire way to get your blood racing, but it is also tremendously interesting and educational. (Not to mention a once in a lifetime experience your delegates will want to tell their families about right away.)

Whale watching and Heart of Abalone

For the conservationist

Your conference-going crowd might appreciate a more in-depth knowledge and understanding of the area surrounding your corporate breakaway. For the visitors who do not seek only to be entertained, but rather to feel like they are being enriched in their free time, it might be worth considering activities with conservation as the theme. The easiest (and most cost effective) activity is simply to ferry your delegates to Gearings Point in Hermanus during whale season. These giant beauties are visible from the edges of the cliffs – the town hasn’t been named the whale-watching capital of the world for nothing, after all!

For those looking for something a little more “hands-on”, book a tour of a working abalone farm with Heart of Abalone. There is even an option to include a tasting of the delicacy, your delegates can purchase souvenirs from their shop to take home and the tour is fascinatingly interesting. Just outside the little town of Stanford you will find the famous big cat sanctuary Panthera Africa – also worth a visit if you are headed that way.

Hermanus art galleries

For the art-lover

If your delegates are artistically-minded, Hermanus is – again – the number one recommended destination, in this category. The surrounding towns have artists with beautiful galleries in own right, but Hermanus boasts a collection of almost 20 galleries – most of them within walking distance of one another. It seems then, that it is no coincidence that the locals have started an art + walking event! Every month the locals roam the streets of the town for the First Friday Artwalk – an event visitors from neighbouring towns flock to attend as well, since it really is quite special. The galleries stay open until 8 o’clock in the evening (as opposed to 5) and treat their guests to beautiful art, wine, snacks and even some life music here and there. It really is not to be missed if you find yourself in town on the first Friday of the month. Nonetheless, if you miss the event, have your delegates make up their own Artwalk. They will get to take in the sights and sounds of the town with its spectacular mountain backdrop and perhaps even spot a whale or two!

Fresh produce from Hermanus Country Market

For the crowd that wants to take it easy

Sometimes, after concentrating for a long time, your delegates might just want some free time to explore. Some might just want to have a cup of coffee, read a newspaper and take in the sights. Visiting a few markets might be just the thing to help them unwind and relax before another brainstorming session and they might also appreciate the time to shop for a few treats to take home for family members waiting at home. The Hermanus Country Market is open every Saturday. This vibrant market is a hubbub of activity within a relaxed rural atmosphere and has become one of the most popular weekly market venues in the country. Surrounding towns like Kleinmond, Botrivier and Stanford also have regular markets that are easy to find using social media. A wonderful way to take a breather, get something truly delicious to eat and perhaps mingle with the locals.
